Why weren't we given an immortal soul?" the little mermaid sadly asked. "I would gladly give up my three hundred years if I could be a human being only for a day, and later share in that heavenly realm."

"You must not think about that," said the old lady. "We fare much more happily and are much better off than the folk up there."

"Then I must also die and float as foam upon the sea, not hearing the music of the waves, and seeing neither the beautiful flowers nor the red sun! Can't I do anything at all to win an immortal soul?"

"No," her grandmother answered, "not unless a human being loved you so much that you meant more to him than his father and mother.

Unlike the happily resolved Disney version, the real Little Mermaid story written by Hans Christian Andersen
has a more tragic end to the Little Mermaid showing her self sacrifice to save the prince, the love of her life and becoming sea foam but gains an immortal soul into heaven

I had several beautiful refernce poses in water from :iconsinned-angel-stock: for a while and sketched this a while ago and started work on it and put aside when other projects surfaced and needed to be finished, in the begining i wasn't sure about it but it kinda grew on me and decided to finish it, the reference pose is not meant for a close up
it's more of a full figure seated pose in water and initially had skethed it that way but changed my mind
and did it my own way, i know the story and artwork it's a bit sad
thought i share it anyway i think it shows a more 'human' true side to a mermaids life.

The water/sea has a more sweeter blue sky color than what my scanner picked up.

Hope you like it :) If you would like handsigned prints visit my website [link]

Completed with Acrylics & Color Pencils on 11x 8 '5 Arches hotpress Watercolor Paper.

Many thanks to :iconsinned-angel-stock:
for the beautiful stock.

I love that real story of the Little Mermaid, when she turns into the foam of the ocean... and I love the way they described her so much. This is so beautiful, another instant fav!

In my own salvation
And your eternal slumber
Legend shall speak
Of sacrifice at world’s end
The wind sails over the water’s surface
Quietly, but surely

The real Little Mermaid was terribly depressing. I didn't like the prince, he was so condescending. :bleh:

“Oh, I’m sorry! Did I get you?”
“No, you didn’t ‘get me’! It’s an electric drill! You get me, you KILL me!”
